Piano Lessons

“The piano keys are black and white, but they sound like a million colours in your mind!” -- Maria Cristina Mena
Is my child ready to start PIANO LESSONS?

I have been teaching kids for years and found that most 4-year-olds are ready and able to focus long enough to learn a simple song. If you are still not sure, have a look at the quick checklist below -

  • My child is happy to sit and concentrate for a short period of time ( 15 minutes, to begin with )

  • My child knows the alphabet from A to G and can sequence them correctly ( A B C D E F G )

  • He/she has learnt numbers from ONE to FIVE

  • He/she knows the difference between left and right

  • My child shows a desire and interest in playing the piano

If your child could do most of the above then don't hesitate- Let their piano adventure begin!

How LONG does my child's lesson need to be?

For children ages 4-5, I would recommend 30 minutes to begin with. It is very important to keep the lessons fun, interesting and snappy for them!

From ages 6 years onward, try 45mins or One Hour. Most people expect that piano lessons should only allow the students to 'learn to play the piano', and a lot of piano teachers often neglect the most important elements of music training, for example, aural training, theory and music history/appreciation. These are important skills and should be developed in the early years.

Do I need a PIANO at home?

Yes. Students enrolled in piano lessons will be given assignments each week to practice at home. We expect students to be able to put in consistent practice time throughout the week, so having a piano at home is essential. For beginners, I’d be happy to recommend inexpensive options, including basic keyboards, that may be suitable to start. Once you know your child is interested, I recommend a proper acoustic piano. Best brands are Yamaha and Kawai, and of course the famous Steinway and Bosendorfer for those who have unlimited budgets.

Can I sit in on my child's PIANO LESSONS?

Parents are encouraged to sit in on piano lessons - family involvement greatly impacts a student’s progress. It is vital for parents to know what materials are covered during that lesson, and what the student should be practicing at home during the coming week.
